Creative Mental Training
Being Creative Why is creativity very important? With creativity, we can invent or reinvent things like the future. Or as one of my participants at a lecture once said, "make life less
boring." At which time I had to say, "or make life more exciting," this way we keep it in a positive sense. The reason for doing this is so that the mind thinks about what
you say and thus is directed towards it. If you say, "don't get into a car accident," the mind visualizes the car accident. Instead, it is safer to say, "drive safely," or
"stay alert." To make things fit into this positive frame of reference, we need to be creative.
We think in pictures Creativity gives us the ability to change something and enhance its growth. In memory training, the way we think and creativity are major ingredients to having a
magical memory. Creativity allows us to take something that's not tangible and make it memorable. Let's say that I have a fruit bowl and in this bowl are plums,
apples, bananas, mangos, a frog, oranges, grapes, apricots, blue berries, peaches and strawberries. What's unique in the fruit bowl? If I ask you an hour from now or
even a day later, what was in the fruit bowl you will definitely remember the frog. Why? Because a frog in the fruit bowl is unique. With creativity we can create this
type of uniqueness. This is true in memory, business, success and life.
Creativity creates life, without it we would have no inventions, no techniques, no sports cars, and certainly no personality. Everyone has the power to be creative,
some of us just need more practice. The next time something happens to make you angry, be creative and ask, "what about this is funny?"
Mental In the Martial Science, it is not required to always do things physically but to
practice mentally as well. You can actually improve your skill level by training mentally. A study was done a while back with a basketball team where one group
did nothing and their overall percentage dropped. Another group practiced physically and their skill level increased about 20%. Another group only visualized
their training and they still increased their level about 20%. A group that trains and visualizes can improve as much as 40%. So you can see the power of using our mental abilities.
Training If you do something once, are you skilled at it? If you go to one self-defense
seminar, are you now going to be able to defend yourself? No! Why not? Because it is not a conditioned response. How do we get it that way? Through training. Self
-defense is not "technique one," and "technique two." In a fight, you can't say, "Um.... just a second, I am trying to remember technique number 87." It must be a
natural reaction. To develop this, it is not the techniques alone that are going to help you to learn, it is your willingness to learn and then make it a part of you. Your
ability to be able to adapt and grow. But techniques alone don't work. I can easily teach someone a technique against a punch, but it won't be enough because techniques alone don't win fights.
CMT in action Creative Mental Training principles are used to train top athletes. For example, let's
say a top skier is about to ski down a slope. "Coach, I'm scared," he screams. The coach asks, "what type of animal would slide smoothly and confidently down this
hill?" The skier thinks and says, "a fish." "Okay, then be a fish," says the coach. So the skier thinks about being a fish, this changes his focus and believe it or not it
gives him the ability to make it down the slope. It's like putting on a costume and feeling invincible; the creative mental imagery helps. Let's say that Billy is walking
the streets again and a guy jumps out with a giant sword and is about to slice and dice. Billy will need to adapt some type of mental attitude. Could he act like a fish?
No, he'll become sushi! What type of animal attitude could he adapt for an improved ability to survive? How about a tiger, bear or a lion? He can develop this
animal attitude in his mind and think, "that's what I am" and he will react like that. Believe it or not, it works. What the mind can conceive and believe, it can achieve.
Visualization After a class in the Martial Science, a few minutes are spent to mentally review the
physical training just received. This is a great form of training. You can solve problems, handle situations and perfect strategies in the mind. CMT is great to
mentally see yourself doing things right and everything going smoothly. Once you have learned something, you can then place it in the mind and improve it or change
it. Martial Science practitioners can go home and review all the techniques, movements and stances that they've learned. They can create defensive strategies
against punches, kicks and so on, all in the mind. With CMT you never stand in line just waiting or getting upset in a traffic jam. Use your waiting time for CMT.
Visualizations in practice Visualizing consists of imagining what it is you really want. The image is vivid, colorful, detailed and most importantly, live. In your imagination, you need to feel
like you are in the experience. You have to see it through your own eyes with as much emotion as possible. The intensity of your emotion determines the
effectiveness of the visualize-ti-on. All your senses need to be active so you not only see it, but you also hear, taste, smell and feel it. You talk, sit, stand, breathe
and feel the way you would if it was real, as if you were experiencing it in the moment.
Every new idea begins as a fantasy, a discovery that does not yet exist; it is the seed for our future. Fantasizing is one of the most exotic and interesting things we
can do with our minds. It is also one of the most powerful techniques in the world to materialize what you really want. Unfortunately most of us use it in the wrong
way. Many of us concentrate too much on the things that we don't want. Because the brain excepts this negative image like a command, the chance is great that it will come true.
It's like taking a picture, what you focus on, "snap," is what you get.
