Mind - Body - Spirit
Synergy for success The triangle is a good symbol for your focus. Inside it we can place our goals, dreams and aspirations. Each side of the triangle or wall can represent an area we
wish to develop for our own total self worth. The left side being the mind - where all our knowledge and skill are given birth. The right side is the representation of the
body and physical skills. The bottom side is the spirit of all that we are and strive to become. These are the walls of change. The walls are always there, but must
constantly change if we are to grow. If one wall is removed, the others collapse. So we must have synergy and keep all three areas in balance.
Wall of Mind
"Mind over matter."
"Healthy mind, healthy body."
"You are what you think you are."
A true warrior is a strategist and a thinker. To be intelligent, one must strive to increase his/her knowledge and wisdom. When building our minds, we aim to
increase the acrostic, K.U.M.A.:
Knowledge (arts-skills-facts)
Understanding (science-foundation-clarity)
Mental arts (visualization-meditation-success)
Attitude (confidence-discipline-optimism)
Wall of Body
Our mind gives us the devotion to maintain a fit and strong physical body. You must also learn to control your body and treat it with respect. Remember, the body
is the temple of the "me" in your mind. You live in your body, it is your house. We execute exercises that increase strength, we exercise to improve energy for internal
and external fitness. We also exercise proper eating habits that keep the temple of our souls (and mind) clean and free of toxins. We use our physiology in specific ways that in turn create certain states of mind.
Wall of Spirit
Faith in our beliefs, a genuine care for those around us and all of what gives us significance, also gives us spirit. Spirit is necessary for us to live daily with the
inspiration and dedication it takes to fulfil our life's desires. There is team spirit; that untouchable force that bonds people together for a higher purpose. You can also
be spiritual and illustrate faith in the miracle of life, fuelled by your beliefs. Spirit is an undivided part of our world and it amidst the active energy of all manifestations.
When you have these three areas in balance, then you are in focus. The triangle is
complete. All the while, you do not focus directly on one problem or thought, (you do not dwell), you look through it. You are stable and you endure.
Synergy of Mind, Body and Spirit
Let's say that you're so stressed that you're about to explode. You go to one
doctor and he says there are mental exercises you can do to relieve stress. Can you think of some? How about a meditation where we visualize ourselves going to the
beach, laying down and picturing the sun on our legs, feeling the warmth as it continues across our body. This is an excellent relaxation technique and it can be done mentally. There are many forms of mental relaxation.
You might go to another doctor who tells you what you need to do is play squash. He explains that you need to get some exercise because exercise is good and it's
going to release all that stress you have. Go jogging, swimming or biking, but get some exercise. Does this work? Yes, physical exercise releases tension.
You might go to a third doctor who will tell you that you're lacking spirit. You're
over stressed because you don't have direction in your life, you don't know your genuine purpose, and you don't feel in control. It can be the spirit of teams, getting
people to help you, working with others or knowing your purpose. You need to have a strong reason that drives you, and at the same time it will relieve stress.
So we have three different ways to relieve stress: mentally, physically, and spiritually - mind, body, and spirit or what I call MBS. Which one is the best to use
? None--we use all three, which is called "synergy."
Synergy
Hold out the index finger of your right hand. Now hold your left hand in front of you; palm open and the fingers pointing up. Pretend your hand is a brick wall (to
grow, you must have a good imagination). Strike your finger against the imaginary brick and imagine what it would feel like if you were trying to break this brick with
your finger. Finger against brick, finger against brick, finger against brick. This is the "I'll win the lottery" approach to brick breaking. What we have is a finger smashing
into a brick. Wouldn't that hurt? It does hurt, stop doing it. Some of us just keep on striking with the "someday I'll break that brick" attitude.
The "Science of Synergy," is the combination of parts to make a more powerful whole. The Science of Synergy is the system of mental self-defense, and an ACE
wears a black belt in this art. ACE stands forAchieving Combined Excellence. If you hold out your hand, palm open, you have five fingers. If you close those fingers
together, you form a fist. The fingers alone are not as strong as the combination of them all. You have mind, body, and spirit as powerful separate entities. Or, you can use them together and you have synergy.
Mind, Body, Spirit triangle
We use a triangle as a problem-solving device. If we have stress, we can solve the problem by putting the triangle over it and saying, "what can I do Mentally, what
can I do Physically and what can I do Spiritually to resolve this problem?" The same thing works if you have a different problem. For example, you're overweight, place the triangle over the problem for the solution.
What can you do to lose weight?
Mentally you might create the identity you want to adapt to or become. What is the image you desire? What kind of a person will you have to become in order to
achieve this task? Did Batman just one day decide to don a cape and a mask? No, first it was a mental decision, he created an identity for himself. Being overweight is
a mental condition; that's the source. If you want to solve it, go to the source.
Physically we might exercise, change our eating habits and the way we move. Since being overweight is a physical result from lack of movement and too much
food, we can logically reverse the procedure with lots of movement and less food.
Spiritually we can get on course, develop a genuine purpose and find support from your environment. Sometimes just telling people what you are attempting to
do will be enough motivation to get you onto your feet to start doing it.
Another example: what can you do to improve your learning?
Mentally we might start by being open-minded. Take in all the clues and then make an educated decision. Utilize techniques that work, don't just dwell on
traditional strategies like the average person.
Physically we can be more active. Do you need coffee to get up, to move or to work? If you were to sit up in your chair and take a deep breath and clap your
hands vigorously, your energy level would rise dramatically. This stimulates the body and thus effects the brain as well. Coffee is a crutch, not a solution.
Spiritually we could teach others what we know. Teaching is like hammering a
nail. When you learn, it's like getting the nail in place, when you teach it's like hammering it in. This also helps generate motivation. The stronger you want your
structure to be, the more you must teach. Do you understand how you can use this to solve some problems in your life?
States of Mind
Whenever you want optimum results in any kind of achievement, you need to get into a specific kind of state. A state of mind is simply an emotion we experience
at any given time. For example, we can be in a depressed state or an energized state. This mind set is important if we are going to be doing the best that we can. It
will be difficult to feel energized or perform tasks requiring energy if you're not in an energized mental state. You also need to know what state of mind to be in when you are going to achieve something.
Programing States of Mind
When we begin to learn, we need to have a physiology that is congruent with learning. We can create a kind of anchor. An anchor is where we create a stimulus
response much like Ivan Pavlov's bells had on his dogs. Have you heard of Ivan Pavlov? If you haven't, it sounds like a storybook for children, "Ivan Pavlov and his
dogs." Actually, it is in reference to a scientific study by scientist Ivan Pavlov. What Ivan would do is put some tasty food on one side of a door with the dogs on the
other side. The dogs would smell the food and start to salivate. When they began to salivate, Ivan would ring a bell. He did this enough times that he created an
anchor between the bell and salivating. All he would have to do is ring the bell and the dogs would begin to salivate even when the food wasn't present. He
conditioned the dogs to respond to the bell as if they were smelling the food.
Do dogs eat bells? So why are they salivating at the sound of "ding?" Because their
minds don't know the difference. They were programmed to link the bells with the food, which in turn created the stimulus response of salivation. We all have bells in
our lives; some of us might have a bell that gets us to crave chocolate or ice cream. A bell might make you cry or feel depressed. Why? Because you have been
conditioned to react a certain way when the bell rings. The bell could be anything from a touch on the shoulder to a song you remember from long ago. It could be a
voice, the clapping of hands, a touch or even a look. Anything that is unique enough to trigger a response can create an anchor.
So how can we condition ourselves for achievement? You have to ring your own bells. You can start by anchoring a time you when you felt good or like a peak
performer. When you feel great, anchor and remember all the things you did when you felt that way so you can continue to anchor it at home. Find all the things that
you can, combine them together to create the state you desire. When you feel great, make a fist (ring a bell) and sooner or later, just making the fist will make you feel great.
Physiology
The fastest way for someone to change their state is to change their body; change their physiology. Remember the mind-body connection. In other words,
the body needs to mimic a past position that stimulates the necessary response.
For example, if a person made a fist every he practiced self-defense and felt confident, then the necessary mental state would be triggered when he repeats the
same fist. So what we need is an anchor that creates the mental state we want and the best way to do this is to get our body into a position that mimics the feeling.
For example, how would you stand, breath, walk and talk if you felt happy and serene? How would you stand, breath, walk and talk if you were about to
defend yourself from a punch to the nose? I am sure you will notice the difference, even your breathing will have a drastic change. Try it!
Depression
It's the same thing if you are going to defend yourself against extreme happiness. Every once in a while, happiness sneaks up on us to do its dirty work. But
sometimes we just don't want to be happy; hey it's our right to be unhappy. We need to know how to get into our depressed stance so we can stop happiness in its tracks.
So what would your body have to do so that your mind felt depressed? First you would probably slump your shoulders and lower your head, next your breathing
would get shallow; and if you spoke, it would be more of a mumble. You would think of depressing moments and walk around as if surrounded by walls. This might
seem comical, but it is even more comical that people actually do this without the knowledge that they are in complete control. What we then have are simply stances that generate states.
Stances and States
Every stance is an attitude. If you want to have a specific feeling, you change your stance. Remember--stances are nothing more than physiological changes. Change
your physiology and you change your mental attitude along with it. Thus, we can use stances to determine our states. What state of mind do you want?
As we mentioned earlier, when someone is depressed, they change their physiology to match their emotional outlook. The same rule applies when
someone is happy and enthusiastic. Have you ever seen a joyous motivated person with their head down, shoulders slumped and a barely audible mumble of, "I can do it?" It is totally incongruent and impossible to succeed in this way.
Our mind and body are linked; if you change one, you will change the other. This is how we use our stances. If we want a feeling of power, then we stand in a power
stance. It is much faster to change your physiology than to meditate over your emotions, especially in a combat situation. Can you imagine asking your opponent
to wait a minute while you mentally prepare for the situation? It is much faster to simply drop into the correct stance and use it like an anchor. This way you don't have to think about it. It is an automatic reaction.
Different postures are associated with different mind sets or feelings. Using the recipe theory, anything we create simply takes a few ingredients. For example, to
bake ourselves the energized state, we throw in a little rapid breathing, straight postures, high heads, quick movements and exuberant thoughts.
Control
Some people ask themselves, "why am I depressed?" They can't figure out why.
They say, "I don't know why I am depressed, I only thought about all the bad things in my life, and then I started crying." Sometimes you can say, "I have no
control over it," but in actuality you do. You just have to take responsibility and say, "I choose to be depressed today," that's realistic. But if you're depressed and you
say, "it's because of this, this or this," you choose to have it be represented that way. You choose to think about those things and let them control your feelings.
Granted, there will be situations in your life when you will feel badly due to a traumatic experience. You can be sad (which is a decision) and eventually you will
decide you no longer want to be sad (which is a decision) and then you go on. Wouldn't it be nice to get over it more quickly?
To get over things quickly we need mind control. Mind control is simply having control over your own mind; the ability to control your own emotions, your feelings
and your state. If a person is in the state of mind of depression, their body is going to adapt to that state of mind. So if we want can to get into a specific state of mind,
we need to change our body because as soon as we change our body, it will immediately change the way we think. Try it! The same thing is true with your mind;
if you start thinking a specific way, your body is going to adapt to it. Look at the roof with a big smile on your face and attempt to get depressed without bringing
your head down or changing your smile. A study was done using this technique on manic-depressives, and you know what... it worked!
