MIND SCIENCE BASICS

Labels

The system I teach is not a "martial art" simply because an art is not tangible enough for the true warrior. The Martial Science utilizes proven methods for the better development of the most important practitioner, you. It is not over focused on titles, ranks and foreign names. It is the belief of the martial Science that it is the effectiveness of a technique and not its name or origin that is important. This is to say that basically we don't care if a forward roll is called "ukemi" in Japanese. The important part is the development of the roll itself. We spend too much time worrying about unimportant so-called "facts" that we spend less time on the actual development of what's important.

Is your goal to learn self-defense and develop your personal skills or are you interested in learning a new language and worshipping some master you know nothing about?

The reality of fiction

There are hundreds to thousands of students learning techniques of self-defense that will just not work in a real fight. Their defenses are not scientific enough to be realistic. Thus, we have a black belt teaching unrealistic, ineffective techniques to people who think they are learning a method of self-protection.

You may or may not be familiar with martial arts or street fighting. But I myself have never seen anyone on the street throw a punch like they do in most martial art schools.

People continue to be blind of this fact or ignore it, due to either personal security or social constraints. Once we understand the meaning of congruency we can then go on to being honest about our true reality.

Warming up

Most people already know the importance of a warm up. We do so to keep from pulling a muscle. It is a form of preparation. So how can we warm up for life? One way would be to not jump into anything right away. This is how we result in setting ourselves up for disappointment.

Many of us jump up and start running blindly, only to pull a muscle, twist an ankle and fall off an imaginary bridge into the icy cold water. When you are warmed up, you don't pull muscles. You take your time and you succeed.

Basics

Stick with the simple things first. This is number one. Before you can run, you must first learn to walk. We all know the people who want to go straight to the advanced skills. They might start off looking good (most of the time not), but either way they will lack a foundation for there skills to rest upon. It's like building a house out of toilet paper. It might look nice, but as soon as it rains the whole thing crumbles and disappears. Take one step at a time. I find the students who try to get into the advanced skills early, are the ones who also quit early. You first start with the basics.

Be Prepared

No matter what it is you do, you must always prepare if you are going to be your best. The one who prepares the most is the one who comes out ahead. Though this principle sounds familiar and maybe even obvious enough to just disregard, don't. Be sure and ask yourself consistently the many ways of preparation. Sometimes we just don't notice when it should be applied. It has been said that prevention is the best medicine. Prevention starts with preparation. Instead of waiting until you get to the doctors' office to be told about a growing cancer, prepare by eating and living right in the first place.

Then there is the other side of the bridge. The extreme case of too much preparation. Usually we can never have too much preparation, that is, if we eventually take action. But there are times when students train for their yellow belt, but never have the faith to test for it. Or worse, there are students who want to train, but first, want to lose a little weight before they come into class. They want to fix their schedule so that they can be consistent. They want to save a little money so that they can pay for their program. They convince themselves they are doing this for their own good and so they can do their best when they do start. Beginning starts with beginning.

Expect the Unexpected

Things may not go as planned and you must except these possibilities. You must expect the unexpected. Whatever you do, do not focus on the negative possibilities in order to avoid them. If you do, then you will direct your focus towards them and only enhance their chances of interrupting your success.  Be prepared, but don't dwell.

Flexibility

Be aware of your limitations. If we know our limitations, then we can keep from setting ourselves and others up for disappointment.

Let me ask you a question: "Can you do the splits?"

Do you think the best way to learn to do so is to just drop into the splits? When the muscles say "stop!" You just keep dropping, stretching, tearing and going down until you are in the splits. Do you know what will happen if you do this? You will scream loud enough to wake the dead, and when you're done you won't be able to walk for a very long time. If you can do the splits, you understand the amount of time and energy you put into attaining this stretch. When we know how far we can stretch, we keep from overdoing it. Many students overestimate their abilities and train too hard for their current skill level. What ends up happening is they develop either an injury or total confusion as to what it is they are doing. They end up sitting on the bench unable to train at all. This goes against your goal.

Ability to adapt

Questions:

  • When things change direction, do you tighten up or relax?
  • How do you react in a crisis?
  • What do you do when the schedule changes?
  • How do you communicate when someone doesn't speak the way you do?
  • Are you flexible in your skills or are you firm and force everyone to adapt to you?
  • Can you accept change?

Without change, you will not go very far. Just as an airplane must constantly change its course to stay on course, you must do the same. Don't change the goal; just change the small steps towards achieving it.

A happy direction

To achieve success we must first become success conscious. Many people drift with the tide of life not knowing what it is they want or not doing what it is they desire. They lack direction and goals, or worse, they lack motivation. Without motivation, goals and direction, we cannot achieve the level of personal success that creates our destiny. How good would our futures be if everyone were drifting? The world would be without strength and growth.

Success consciousness is the realization that there is a happy and successful way to live. Your growth will develop from your hunger for wisdom. If we wanted, you and I could think, make, and achieve anything that we desired in life. When we are children, we create wonderful worlds of how our futures might be. As we grow older however, we begin to lose touch with our dreams. Our surroundings begin to fill our minds with doubt and we start to use our logical thought process. This logic dictates following one path because you might fail if you leave the herd. That type of logic can be more appropriately named "fear." The ACE practitioner is not afraid to take the calculated risk and step onto a new path of personal achievement.

Be Positive

Positive thinking is becoming more popular, but it is still feared by those chained to the thoughts of a needed painful reality.Let us understand that good thoughts produce positive results and that bad thoughts produce negative results. Most noted success based literature highly stresses the importance of having a good thought pattern. If Thomas Edison had listened to the unbelieving or negative opinions of others, he would have remained with the doubters in their world of limitations. He would have remained "in the dark." The process of positive thought balanced by realistic strategies gives us the means necessary to live the life we want instead of preparing for a life that may never arrive.

Young and Fun!

As you grow in this science of personal achievement, I would like you to adopt two specific personalities. The first is to be young and the second is to be fun. Can you do this? Great! Now this doesn't mean that I want you crawling on your hands and knees with a big smile on your face. What it means is that I would like for you to have a healthy and pleasant attitude. When you are being young and fun, it will make the process of learning easier and more enjoyable.

Style

You will also have to adopt a personal science towards learning. This means you need to have your own style. The problem with traditional learning is that it has no style, or I should say, "it's out of style." It's as traditional as a suit of armor. When you try on the traditional suit of armor, you might realize it doesn't fit. A suit of armor is already built for one size; one size that fits almost none. So, like the suit of armor, traditional learning expects you to fit into its unrealistic designs. Traditional learning is simply out of style; nobody wears the once popular heavy suit of armor anymore, it's just not flexible. Can you imagine trying to fight in one of those things?

What is accelerated success?

To attain accelerated achievement, the first thing we have to understand is why.

  • Why do we want to achieve?
  • Why is learning important?
  • When do we start learning and achieving?
  • When do we stop?

The fact is, we are going to be learning and hopefully achieving until the day we die. So it's a long and important process to master. The quality of our lives is determined by the quality of our ability to learn and achieve. Learning and achievement is important, but why accelerated achievement? I am talking about the acceleration of our actions.

If I am speaking to you at a fast pace and I am moving, your brain is going to be more active and stimulated. Thus, we will have "accelerated learning." If I were speaking very slowly, not moving, and using dull, technical words, that would be "accelerated boredom." The same is true for achievement. You can crawl though life after your goals or you can get up and run like the wind. So we use acceleration to keep our life and brain stimulated. When we are stimulated we learn, remember, and enjoy more.
