The Thailand camp was an inclusive live-in program covering housing and training, teaching realistic martial arts, modern ninjutsu and the mental curriculum under Rick Tew.

Where it was

Koh Samui, the third largest island in Thailand, with an international airport. The beaches, jungle and terrain of the island were used as training environments rather than a single dojo — which was the point. Technique that only works on a flat mat has not been tested.

The training week

DayFocus
Day oneModern ninjutsu and weapons — sword, stick, knife and staff
Day twoCross training, parkour and yoga
Day threeMeditation, motivation and focus
Day fourKrav Maga style street combat
Day fiveMuay Thai, sparring and MMA

Who came, and why

Students attended for a minimum of two weeks, and some stayed the full year. Most chose start dates around September, January, March or June. The reasons students gave for coming, in their own order:

  • Learn realistic martial arts and self-defense
  • Build genuine confidence
  • Get in shape and meet new people
  • Train toward teaching martial arts professionally
  • Step away from a routine that had stopped working

The camp took expert martial artists and complete beginners in the same group. More than half arrived with no experience at all.

Other schools only teach a fighting system like a competition and non-realistic self-defense; in RTMS you learn real combat training applied like full contact sparring and situations for real self-defense. Not to mention weaponry, outdoor training, rock climbing and more.
